  • Students, how would you like to take a class on a university campus this summer?  Well, it's Academic Talent Search time again!  Last year a record number of Riles' students took the ATS qualifying exam that allowed them to take fun and exciting classes at Sacramento State University.  The ATS qualifying test for this year will be held on February 23rd.   Please see Mrs. Williams for more information.  You must register to take the test.

Now, __________________________________will lead us in the pledge.

St. Baldricks

Team Page:  Antelope Shave to Save Crew

Dear Wilson C. Riles Students, Staff, and Parents,

Have you ever considered saving someone’s life by shaving your head?

Now you can!  Every year, thousands of brave men, women, and children have joined the St. Baldrick’s Foundation by giving up their locks to support childhood cancer research. I’d like to invite you to make a “bald” statement at the Roseville Galleria on Saturday March 10, 2012.  You can raise funds and help fight the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.

St. Baldrick’s events have raised approximately $118 million, providing research grants to doctors and scientists at more than 200 institutions to pursue the most promising new cures for childhood cancer, in addition to making clinical trials available to more children than ever. Since 2000, St. Baldrick’s has hosted more than 4,200 head-shaving events, shaving more than190,000 heads in 28 countries and 50 U.S. states.

Think about this staggering fact: one out of every five children diagnosed with cancer will not survive – that’s one child too many.  Join me in my efforts to find a cure so no child has to endure this dreadful disease.

I am currently a sophomore at Center High School, and I participated on the Riles Team for this event for the three years I attended Riles, with Mrs. Luigi as our team leader and inspiration.  She has a son who is a cancer survivor, and this event is very near and dear to her heart.  She in turn made it important to me and many other students, and even though I don't attend Riles any longer, in her absence I want to continue what I feel is a very important tradition at the school.  I have formed a team called the Antelope Shave to Save Crew, this is open to all students, teachers, parents, and community members in Antelope.  I have shaved my head for the past 4 years at the St. Baldrick's event, and have personally raised $1,505 total.

If you want to participate, please fill out and return the Participant Agreement, available in the school office, have your parents sign it, return it to the office and then go online to join the Antelope Shave to Save Crew:
www.stbaldricks.org/teams/antelopeshavetosave

I will be holding an informational meeting at the school in Room #616 on Thursday Feb. 9, 2012 at 2:30 p.m.  If you can't attend this meeting, you can email me at lukestonewalk1@yahoo.com, and I can answer any questions you have.

To learn more about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, visit the team page here or visit www.StBaldricks.org or call 888.889.BALD.  If shaving is too much of a commitment, please consider volunteering, donating, or spreading the word.  Thank you for your support.

Together, let’s Conquer Kids’ Cancer!

Sincerely,
Luke Campbell

It is Academic Talent Search time!  This wonderful program provides 4th - 9th grade students the opportunity to take interesting and fun courses on the Sacramento State University campus during the summer.  See the official website here.

Wilson C. Riles will be offering the ATS qualifying exam on February 23rd at 12:35 p.m.  This year, the testing fee is $15.00 however; there is a fee waiver for the cost of the test for those who qualify.  To help students attend classes last summer, ATS granted over $42,000 in financial support.

If you would like more information about the ATS courses or to register your student for the exam, please contact Cheryl Williams, school counselor, at (916) 787-8100 ext 1120 or email to Cheryl@centerusd.org
